Violin & Strings Lesson FAQ’s

A safe age to start is typically 5, but it can vary between 3 – 8 years old.  The main factors in deciding when to start a child in lessons come down to attention & focus skills, the child’s individual desire to learn and parent commitment. (The younger the child, the more involved the parent will need to be for them to succeed.)

For very young students (3 & 4 years old) we often set up a series of about 2-3 trial lessons to make sure they are ready to start.  We give you our honest opinion if it’s good to start now, or better to wait.  We would rather see a child successful and starting at the right age for them, instead of seeing consistent frustration which could develop a distaste for learning an instrument!  You can trust that we will always give you the best advice.

YES – 100%.

How will you learn or get better if you can’t practice?
(Imagine how hard it would have been to learn to drive if you didn’t have a car available for you to learn.)

String instruments are made in multiple sizes to accommodate the youngest of students.  The only way we recommend to determine size is to go to a professional – either your strings instructor, or a local instrument shop.  The student needs an appropriately sized instrument in order to be successful and won’t be able to learn properly if it’s too big or too small.

We often recommend renting to young students, as they will need multiple sizes before they finally grow into a full sized instrument.  Buying a new instrument every few years can get a costly (at least for a decent one!).  We know you can find cheaper models online, but they often come with issues and at minimum, need professional set up after you purchase.  Please be careful if you take this route, as many instruments are quite low quality and will make your learning more difficult.

Renting is also a great idea for any student who is testing the waters.  You can almost always rent to own, or return the rental when you want to buy your own instrument.  We do recommend students who are committed and need full sized instruments to make a purchase.

We do offer rentals through our studio, exclusively to our students for your convenience ($21/month).

The instructors will also be happy to give you names of other reputable music stores to rent, or recommendations on instruments for purchase as well.
