Songwriting, Theory & Composition FAQ’s

Not necessarily. Some prior knowledge is very helpful to get you writing quickly, but we can start you from ground zero as well.  A basic working knowledge of piano will give you many more opportunities for accessibility and expression when it comes to writing music.

This answer is dependent on what kind of music you wish to write. If you want to write solo instrumental music, then you just need that instrument. If you wish to dig deeper and write for multiple instruments or ones you don’t own or play, or you dream of using synthetic sounds, or you just want to record yourself, then you need to be considering using a Digital Audio Workstation, or DAW.

The best approach is to discuss options with your teacher based on your goals, but you can always start very simply and purchase more tools & technology overtime.  The teachers will help guide you every step of the way.

There isn’t a clear answer to this question, but most of them are very capable. That being said, some of our teachers personally use Presonus’ Studio One Professional. I find it to be a very intuitive way to work, and Presonus offers a 50% discount for students, which is a very strong plus. They also offer a 30-day trial, which gives you plenty of time to decide if it is a good fit.
