Strings, Guitar, Piano & Composition
Zachery Litchfield is a performer, composer, and passionate educator who specializes in strings, guitar, music theory, and composition. Zachery has experience playing and teaching across multiple styles including classical, rock, jazz, Latin American, folk, & pop music and teaches music to all ages and levels. He helps students achieve their goals by adapting his organized approach to the educational preferences of each individual.
Zachery’s musical voyage began at 8 years old when his mother, a long time music educator, started teaching him piano. At 9, he begged his parents to enroll him in the school’s strings program where he studied violin and then became infatuated with the cello, which he ultimately chose as his principal instrument. At 12, he picked up the guitar as well. Zachery’s love for music led him to the College of Charleston’s music program where he discovered his passion for composition. As an ambitious undergrad, he composed and debuted several original works, performed in multiple seasons of Piccolo Spoleto Young Artists Series, joined CofC’s first Latin American Music Ensemble as a guitarist, and was two times invited to compose for the Summer Music Performance Program at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece. He received several formal recognitions for his expertise in music, including the Outstanding Research & Creative Works for his symphonic work Cosmic Proportions. Zachery graduated from the College of Charleston in 2016 with a Bachelors in both Cello Performance and Music Composition.
He continued his education at the renowned Eastman School of Music and earned his Masters in Music Composition. Post graduation, he was placed as a finalist for The American Prize in Composition for his thesis work and was later invited back to the college to perform and conduct a seminar on the methods of composition.
As an educator, Zachery taught music production to undergraduates at the Eastman School of music, was recruited by the Charleston County School District to develop and implement new string programs across four elementary schools and has been a private instructor for local music schools, where he taught strings, piano, guitar and composition to students ages 3 to adult. In teaching such a diverse range of people, Zachery learned that in music there is only one constant: music brings a uniquely profound joy and enrichment to people’s lives, especially when experiencing it together. Now, working with Elizabeth Farrell Music, Zachery continues to share that joy with every student he has the pleasure of teaching.
