Greg Howe

Greg Howe

Guitar,  Composition

Greg Howe is a highly experienced performer, composer and music educator of over 25 years. Greg’s journey into the world of music began at a young age, singing in bands at 14 years old. His passion for music was further ignited by the raw energy of the guitar, leading him to start training on the instrument soon thereafter. In just a year, Greg’s dedication and commitment to mastering the guitar were evident, landing him a role of lead guitarist for a local band within a mere few months of guitar lessons.

Greg moved to Los Angeles, California, where he studied guitar and music theory at the Musicians Institute of Technology. There, he honed his expertise in writing and playing across various genres, nurturing a foundation that would shape his career. Under the tutelage of renowned guitarists Joe Diorio and Ted Greene, Greg’s skills blossomed, and he found himself playing in pit orchestras of local theater troupes as well as the Claire Fisher Orchestra and more. After school, Greg returned to Michigan and performed as lead guitar for multiple bands playing everything from Neo Soul to Gospel and Rock. Greg’s passion for instrumental jazz fusion emerged as a focal point, captivating audiences at local venues and summer festivals with his band Groove Yard. Notably, Greg was in Thom Jayne and the Nomads, a World Music band which has been featured on PBS television’s Backstage Pass series and had also opened for Sheryl Crow.

Audience members routinely requested private lessons after seeing Greg perform, so much so that he established his own private lesson home studio and fell in love with teaching. In 2008 he was recruited to teach private instrumental lessons at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Holt Michigan. This church was in affiliation with a K-12 private school which soon after, offered him a position as an instrumental classroom teacher as well as a promotion to Music Director of the entire school. He also continued working with the church as Contemporary Music Director. Over the years his students have gone onto their own musical careers, receiving full guitar performance scholarships and touring as professional musicians.

In 2018, Greg embarked on a new chapter in Florida, briefly pausing his teaching career to explore solo guitar performance and further studies in music theory, improvisation, and jazz theory, expanding his musical horizons beyond the conventional boundaries. His compositions, initially centered on the guitar, evolved to encompass a rich tapestry of instrumentation, voices, and colors. Zoom classes and private lessons for Martin Luther High School continued during this period. However, his love for teaching prevailed, leading him to local schools and eventually to EFMUSIC, where he found his new teaching home.
