Performing in a recital can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience for any musician. But, as important as it is to prepare musically, it’s also essential to know how to behave on stage and in the audience. Here are some tips on proper recital etiquette for performers:

  • DRESS APPROPRIATELY
Dressing well for the occasion is essential. It not only shows respect for the audience and the occasion, but it also makes can make you feel confident and professional! Also, make sure you’ll be comfortable.  (Flip flops, jeans, sneakers, T-shirts, ripped clothing etc. are not appropriate recital wear.)
Something a bit less obvious, watch out for accessories! Dangling/jingling jewelry etc. will probably be a distraction for you while you perform.
  • BE PUNCTUAL
Arrive at the venue well before the scheduled start time of the recital. This will give you plenty of time to warm up, tune your instrument, and get settled before your performance. Arriving late will disrupt performers once the recital begins.
  • TAKE A BOW
After your performance, take a bow to acknowledge and thank your audience. This is a sign of appreciation and Respect.
  • RESPECT YOUR PEERS
You’ll be part of the audience when you aren’t on stage, so be courteous and watch others perform with the same respect you want while you’re up there. Unnecessary noise from whispering, talking, candy wrappers (no food!), etc. during a program is not acceptable. Stay engaged and enjoy the show!

Remember, a recital is a formal event, and proper etiquette is crucial to make it enjoyable for all involved. Follow these simple guidelines, and you’ll be sure to make a positive impression on your audience and fellow performers!
