Sylvia Wilkins is a classically trained vocalist and violinist with a strong background in performance, music education, and working with children. She began playing violin at age seven and singing through church, school choirs, musical theater, and other ensembles. Her early training included private violin study, audition-based youth ensembles such as the Green Mountain Youth Orchestra, and All-County Orchestra & Vocal festivals. She also performed violin and sang for church services, all experiences that ultimately inspired her to pursue music education as a career at the Crane School of Music.
Sylvia earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music in May 2026. During college, she performed in several collegiate ensembles and sang soprano with Stay Tuned A Cappella for all four years. She served as President and later Co-Music Director, helping lead rehearsals, teach vocal parts, and develop ensemble blend and musical interpretation while providing individual vocal feedback. Her work with the group also included creating vocal arrangements and using music notation software and other music technology. During this time she was also recognized with an “Outstanding Soprano Descant” award at an ICCA competition.
Throughout her education and early career, Sylvia has gained meaningful experience teaching music and working with children in a variety of settings. Her music teaching experience includes both private lessons, groups and ensembles where she focuses on proper technique, appropriate repertoire, musical interpretation, and performance. She’s also worked at Oak Hill Children’s Center caring for and teaching children from infancy through school age, planning activities and enrichment experiences, and supporting their social-emotional development. With a clear love for working with kids, Sylvia also made time to do volunteer work in childcare over the years.
Sylvia has a special gift for teaching. Her approach is gentle, calming, and genuine, creating an environment where students feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged to grow. With a background that combines music performance, formal music education, and extensive experience working with children, she brings both strong musical knowledge and a natural ability to connect with young students. Her passion for helping students build confidence, develop their musical abilities, and genuinely enjoy the learning process makes her a wonderful teacher for students of all ages.
