James (J) Ring is a passionate music educator and multi-instrumentalist with more than 25 years of professional experience. James’ musical journey began at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, FL, where he studied a wide range of musical styles, including rock, blues, jazz, flamenco, and classical music. There he developed a strong foundation in classical technique, musicianship, ear training, and ensemble performance. His studies culminated in writing and performing a scholarship-winning senior recital for solo classical guitar and composing the first movement of a symphony at just 18 years old.
He continued his education at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied Composition, Film Scoring, Guitar Performance, and piano before pursuing additional studies in Jazz Performance at the University of North Florida. His collegiate training strengthened his skills in improvisation, arranging, music theory, and ensemble performance while expanding his versatility as a multi-instrumentalist.
While guitar has always been his principal instrument, James also has extensive experience as a drummer and pianist. He began studying piano in high school and continued formal instruction at Berklee and as an adult, building a strong foundation in both traditional technique and practical musicianship. His drum training was shaped through performing and studying with respected industry professionals, including Michael Ball, May Estes, and Grammy Award-winning drummer and educator Ulysses Owens Jr. Today, he helps drum students develop strong technique, rhythmic accuracy, coordination, polyrhythms, and performance confidence, while his piano students build solid fundamentals and gain a deeper understanding of harmony, accompaniment, improvisation, and songwriting.
Alongside his teaching career, James has remained an active performer, composer, and producer. He has performed with both independent and label-backed bands in Nashville, Birmingham, and Portland, composed and produced original music for commercial and educational projects, toured as a guitarist, developed instructional curriculum, and collaborated with professional musicians through EchoForge Productions.
Throughout his teaching career, James has held a variety of educational leadership roles. As Creative Director and Instructor at Concert School of Music in Oregon, he developed and launched a successful rock band program while teaching guitar, piano, bass, banjo, and drums, directing rehearsals, arranging music, coaching student ensembles, and producing live performances. He later served as a Multi-Instrument Instructor at Mason Music in Alabama, creating individualized curriculum for students of varying ages and experience levels, and as Music Program Coordinator at Emerald Coast Autism Center in Florida, where he developed adaptive music experiences for children with diverse learning needs.
James combines professional experience, patience, enthusiasm, and creativity to help every student build a strong musical foundation, gain confidence, and discover their own unique musical voice.
