Nathan Black‘s first instrument was violin. At the age of 6, he played in a local children’s string orchestra in Springfield MO. It was here Nathan learned to love music. After playing violin with the orchestra, he switched to bass guitar and then piano, which would become his main instrument. He would perform as much as possible as a child, and his teacher would even ask him to play duets with the younger students at events. By his teenage years he was playing piano on worship teams. Here, in addition to his classical training, he learned how to read chords & lead sheets and how to improvise, rounding out his skillset on piano.
As an adult Nathan decided to learn guitar and would study using online courses, particularly interested in applying music theory concepts to the guitar.
Recently, Nathan has acted as Musical Director and Pianist for Abounding Grace Fellowship (occasionally playing guitar and drums as well.) As a teacher & educator he’s been Stage Manager, Counselor and Assistant to the director for Lemon Bay Playhouse Theatre summer camp programs for elementary and middle school ages for over 8 years. He’s also taught acting for Englewood United Methodist Church periodically in special programs geared towards elementary and middle school children. Through these experiences, Nathan came to find he had a real knack working with youth and truly enjoyed it.
Combining his musical training with education was an obvious next step. Starting as a substitute instructor for the Rock Box, Nathan quickly became a beloved teacher and was hired as permanent staff in 2022. He feels working with students and seeing them growing in their musical journey is one of the most rewarding experiences in his life.
